Being cute is fine - but you must also look
closely at the economics of breeding miniatures. Consider this…
- You can start your miniature herd with a
purebred embryo that will cost up to $3,800. Most people buy a packet of 3
embryos because the success rate in getting a calf from an embryo is around
60%; so that should give you 2 calves.
[Any breed of ordinary sized cow can be used as the surrogate for growing
you embryos].
- Calves at 6 months of age have sold for up
to $15,000 (boy) and up to $22,000 (girl), with a record sale to date for a
cow of $35,000.
- If you keep your calves you can still
flush and sell your own embryos and semen. A single flush of your heifer/cow
can produce up to 10 embryos, which can sell at $3,800 each. A single
drawing of a young bull can produce 500 straws of semen, which can sell at
$130 each straw.
- So the best rewards come from starting
with buying embryos, but you have to wait up to 2 years for those rewards [9
months gestation + 14 months to maturity]. The quickest way to get a return
on your investment is to buy a heifer or bull - but your initial investment
is higher.
Either way you can make mini Herefords work for
you - whilst enjoying them along the way!
